Jealousy (Hannya Noh-Mask) Netsuke.
Jealousy. (Hannya-Noh-mask Netsuke) (Winter-Spring 2018)
My interpretation of the looks of Hannya, being a female-figure originally, chosen by men, symbolizing Jealousy, one of the most destructive emotions, nevertheless depicted mostly as an almost male figure. To me, the origin of Hannya goes back a long way, to the time-being that men and women were less different than nowadays; just animal-like, primitive creatures.
That’s where the origin of Hannya was born, I guess, in prehistoric times and with an inborn jealous devilishness, not depending on the gender of the individual.
